I've lived around cats and you do eventually get to a point where you have little simple verbalized smalltalk with the smarter ones. They'll have a greeting mewl that's different from a hungry one, or they'll respond specifically to words like "hungry" "go out" "naughty". Or as they get older they develop cranky murmurs, like they're griping to themselves.
