The biggest reason people have the perception that Jesus (and God) would be white people is directly due to the the art of the Renaissance.
The Italian painters and sculptors made the religious figures look like Italians as that was their reference for what people looked like.
This is also where the concept of angels being humans with wings originated from, as in the bible they're described as a wide variety of odd mixtures of things, like an eye with 8 wings.
