Given the heft of his response, and the fact that my whole team at work died when I read this to them (counted at least 2 "Dayummm!"s), I'm gonna say this qualifies.
It would be harder and more expensive to have faked it.
Biggest factor, the lighting. In the photos the light is straight and undiffused. To recreate this you would need LED style lighting, which didn't exist at the time, the closest they had was a red laser kind of lighting which was small scale and super expensive. To light a stage the way the photos were done would require an entire wall of white LEDs which would have cost several several billions and years of engineering.
Has any other country thrown so much doubt on their own greatest achievement?
