I don't think Trump supporters felt guilty about their racist beliefs. But now they feel that their beliefs are socially acceptable since the president is one of them.
There was a black journalist who did an AMA a few years ago who interviewed Klan members any why they joined. He said quite a few of them said they have nothing against black people (don't worry, I'm not about to defend that statement on their behalf), they just felt like they were constantly the dumbest person in the room in normal society, but at Klan meetings, they felt like they were intellectually above average. I can see why Trump rallies would have the same effect on a lot of people. If you surround yourself with intellectually lazy assholes, you get to be the voice of reason, for once. It also explains why lone Trump supporters tend to distance themselves from party tropes when they're alone, but get right back behind them when there's another Trump supporter in the room.

David Cross my man. Great comedian and also a nice political activist. Always speaking truth to power.
