This is a myth by the way. Touching a baby animal will not make their mothers abandon them. Disturbance is the real problem. Birds will sometimes abandon their nests if the nest has been significantly disturbed by predators/humans. It's not because they can smell humans or anything like that.
It's most likely originated from parents who don't want their kids to go around disturbing the animals, or in general to avoid the public going around disturbing the wildlife.
