President Donald Trump took to Twitter TWTR, +1.69% early Sunday morning to tell Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib and Ayanna Pressley to “go back” to their countries and ”fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came.”

So interesting to see “Progressive” Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly...... — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 14, 2019

....and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run. Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how.... — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 14, 2019

....it is done. These places need your help badly, you can’t leave fast enough. I’m sure that Nancy Pelosi would be very happy to quickly work out free travel arrangements! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 14, 2019

Of course, it’s worth noting three of the four women mentioned were born in the United States. Ilhan Omar, born in Somalia, is the only exception.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who has had her own issues with the congresswomen in recent days, was quick to respond, calling Trump’s tweets “xenophobic comments meant to divide our nation.”

New York Mayor and presidential hopeful Bill de Blasio said on CNN that “unfortunately, there’s an American tradition of telling people to go back to where they came from” and that Trump was trying to “gin up his base.”

And then there was this response, which went viral.

I would actually love to go back to where my ancestors came from, but they're not there anymore. They disappeared in an attempt to Make Eastern Europe Great Again. — Peter Sagal (@petersagal) July 14, 2019

From there, the #RacistInChief hashtag gathered momentum. Here are just some of the highlights, from the women singled out and elsewhere:

As Members of Congress, the only country we swear an oath to is the United States.

Which is why we are fighting to protect it from the worst, most corrupt and inept president we have ever seen. https://t.co/FBygHa2QTt — Ilhan Omar (@IlhanMN) July 14, 2019

Saluting these women. Stay pushing. Stay shining. Stay working. Stay a pain in the ass of the #RacistInChief and all his co-horts. Stay true to who you are. Stay safe. Stay together. Stay making us proud. #FourQueens pic.twitter.com/jkcXe6Z96F — Ava DuVernay (@ava) July 14, 2019

But you know what’s the rub of it all, Mr. President?

On top of not accepting an America that elected us, you cannot accept that we don’t fear you, either.

You can’t accept that we will call your bluff & offer a positive vision for this country. And that’s what makes you seethe. — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) July 14, 2019

My mom, a voter, has never texted me about anything @realDonaldTrump said. This #SundayMorning I received a text from her: "we are not going back anywhere, because America is our country."@POTUS underestimates the tremendous anger his new bigoted line of attack is generating. https://t.co/tP2Qhkk7ns — Ted Lieu (@tedlieu) July 14, 2019

While they were seemingly outnumbered in this particular case, Trump’s defenders also had plenty to say about the tweets:

This is ridiculous. President Trump has been recognized as someone who does a tremendous amount for the African American community.

Plus minority unemployment is at record lows under his leadership as POTUS!

Just because it’s a hashtag doesn’t mean it’s true.#RacistInChief — Nick Adams (@NickAdamsinUSA) July 14, 2019

“How can we get people to forget that he’s a rapist?”

“Go harder on the racism?”

“Brilliant!”
