Billie Jean King was the first female athlete to admit to being gay, but only after being outed in a 1981 lawsuit. It hurt her image. Yesterday, after winning the world cup, Kelley O’Hara—who wasn’t previously out—ran to the sideline & kissed her girlfriend. How far we’ve come.

Considering 38 years have passed, one wonders why people still care about other's sexual orientation or sexual preference. 1943 was 38 years before Billie Jean King was outed. Feels like there was more progress during that period.

It's always fascinated me why people care about another person's sexuality. I remember being a young child, maybe 8-10 and found out my best friends dad was gay and not caring at all and went right back to my Lego but it really upset him that I knew and my mother had to come explain to me why I couldn't say anything and why it was a big deal. I never saw it as an issue even at that age.

So what you're saying is that before 1981 any girlfriends of Billie Jean had to say "Billie Jean is not my lover"?
