Mythbusters did test this. It was confirmed/plausible/busted. They could not get a deadly result, but there are confirmed deaths from guns fired into the air.
My high school teacher was working on a car with his buddy, until he collapsed to the ground. A bullet fired into the air came down and hit him in his head. He survived, luckily.

It’s idiots like this that give all gun owners a bad name. “Don’t shoot guns into the air” is literally like the second thing in “gun ownership 101”.
