Oh. Don't get it twisted. People were mad. Social media just didn't exist so we didn't hear/read about the outrage.

This tv movie was basically a pre-recorded stage production similar to the live performances you see every holiday season now. (Added youtube link to movie)

Casting didn't matter unless you had talent. Same way Mrs. Turnblat of hairspray is played by someone in drag (aside from honoring the OG Divine) and not a real woman. Stage productions take liberties because you (the audience) are supposed to be watching the re-enactment of these stories performed by different storytellers who bring their own spin.

Same way Keke Palmer played Cinderella on Broadway (not the original '13 Cinderella). Or Ursula's original understudy was black (and low key better than Sheree Renee Scott but w/e) Or how Matron Mamma Morton-who was originally black has been played by everyone from Queen Latifa to Lucy Lawless (Xena Warrior princess) to Wendy fucking William's for some goddamn reason (Even tho we know she cant sing a note but w/e). Or Wicked having a black Glinda. No one cared because it didn't matter.

Honestly, treat these movies as $100 million dollar stage reenactments. The characters race relating to the story is irrelevant and can be played by anyone.

If it is something bound by race (color purple, Aladdin, Motown, to kill a mockingbird, once on this island, Fiddler on the roof, West Side story, The King and I, Parade, etc.-there are many) then yes you NEED actors that fit the criteria.

And then you even got Hamilton who threw that shit on its head and said "this musical is representing modern America, races be damned" the movie version is going to have the same exact multiracial cast playing Americas founding fathers.

The little mermaid is not one of those films. Literally anyone who can sing and act can take it on.

Also, Whitney stole that whole damn movie and she wasn't even the main character.

Also also...I miss acting Whoopie. SHE WAS SO GOOD! I hope she has a cameo in the color purple musical movie
