A lot of the systems that inform our lives are rooted in outdated, cultural assumptions. An example of one of these assumptions is the belief that the nuclear family structure, sans multi-generations or extended family members, is how most families are organized and live. The healthcare system is built off of the assumption that most families are comprised of one mommy and one daddy who live alone with their kids so they don’t have policy that adequately accommodates for extended family. Welfare programs in the US are the same way. Many of the welfare programs we recognize today were built out of FDR’s New Deal, a time when it was assumed mothers should not work and should always be the primary caretaker of the children. Welfare policies continue to be written and enforced in such a way that defines the default benefactor as mothers not fathers. It’s stupid, human services should meet human needs where they are not where they assume they are.

Can you believe people used to say "The gays only want marriage for the health insurance."

I MEAN SHIT EVEN IF THEY DID THAT'S STILL A PRETTY DAMN GOOD REASON.

Didn't we have a movie about that or something?

universal healthcare

I literally just came from a thread where someone was convinced food wasn't a basic human right.

Food.

So. Good luck with that.
