In defense of The Last Samurai the story was about a white man trying to fit into feudal Japan, becoming a warrior of a different nation. Not white washing Japanese characters. It is literally the basis of the story.

He.. Wasn't a white man playing a native samurai though. A major point of the movie is based on him being white.
