This honestly choked me up and is such an important thing to realise - generosity isn't about quantity in isolation, it's about the relative contribution.
My dad's brother is a totally selfish jackass, but he's pretty wealthy. When my mum and dad were getting married (1986) he promised them he'd get them a microwave as their wedding gift. On the day of their wedding he told them that a microwave was too expensive and he got them a bread bin instead. My mum's brother was broke as fuck for his whole life... But when he heard this he went out and bought them a microwave even though he couldn't really afford it. My mum kept that damn microwave until about 2011 when it finally packed it in. Unfortunately my Uncle John isn't around anymore - but this story always makes me think on what a kind, generous soul he was.

He was given an opportunity to complain and he turned it into a way to give praise to so many others.

My wife has paid her own way to work on several medical-aid projects in Africa. Wait ‘til I tell her she’s a bigger philanthropist than Bill Gates!
