A cautionary tale not to believe everything you read on Wikipedia - one user edited the Economy of Australia page to list the Australian dollar as the "Dollarydoo".

The changes followed a Change.org petition started by Australian man Thomas Probst, which called for the Australian government to rename the currency after a joke from a popular episode of The Simpsons.

The petition has amassed more than 61,000 signatures, 9news.com.au reported.

Something was needed to put some spark into the Australian economy, Probst reckoned, and changing the Aussie dollar to the Dollarydoo would do the trick.

"This will make millions of people around the world want to get their hands on some Australian currency due to the real life Simpsons reference, driving up the value of the Australian currency," Probst wrote.

Before it reverted to its "authorised" version, the top of the Wikipedia page included a disclaimer: "Throughout this article, the unqualified term "dollar" and the $ symbol refer to the Australian dollarydoo unless as noted."

The page listed the Australian total wealth as "6.4 trillion dollarydoos", Pedestrian reported.

The term "Dollarydoos" was first coined in a 1995 episode of The Simpsons called 'Bart vs Australia'.

I mean it was a change.org petition. Not much of a campaign.

They also started a campaign to rename bullfrogs to "chazwazzers"
