Releasing helium balloons could soon be an offence in a coastal city in Australia.
Fremantle, in the west of the country, has decided to make it illegal to release the gas-filled items following a vote from its council.
This ban would see anyone letting off balloons on City of Fremantle land subject to a $125 fine, around £68.
Those behind the decision felt it was necessary due to the “scientifically documented impact” of balloons on marine life, according to The West newspaper.
Mayor Brad Pettitt said: “There is a strong expectation in our community now that things like releasing helium balloons, that obviously have clearly well scientifically documented impact on marine life, is something coastal councils like Fremantle need to take leadership on.
“We’d love to see this ban rolled out more broadly like plastic bags across the whole State.”
There is set to be a promotional campaign raising awareness of the new regulations.
They will officially come into force when details are printed in the WA Government Gazette, according to reports.

If you are not collecting the balloons afterwards it's basically littering.
