PSA about heroin addiction, because it is wildly misunderstood:

Lots of people think a "junkie" is just a loser, a layabout, someone who just wants a fix, etc. And mostly that's true. But as the old commercial goes (you 30+ will recognize it): "No one says I wanna be a junkie when I grow up". And despite the corny factor, that's true.

No one wakes up and decides "today I'll try heroin". Very very few people try it as their first opiate, hardly zero.

The way little Johnny and Sue become heroin junkies is almost always pills. Vicodin is a common intro, OxyCodone is another. They're easy to take, available anywhere, and only require a prescription (and not a local heroin dealer). Small towns have a lot of it.

Well after awhile, that one-pill-on-a-weekend thing gets habit forming. So it becomes one-pill-a-day. And after awhile, that stops doing it too. These pills can range from $40-80 a piece on the street. It adds up quick.

And one day you go to your pill guy and he says "I got nothing". And you're fiending. Maybe he, maybe his friend, but someone will say "I know a guy with heroin..It's the same (stronger) feeling, it'll alleviate the fiend quick, and it's way, way, way cheaper."

And that's where it happens. They're already opiate addicts when they tie off their first vein.

You might note that that initial pill habit is costly. This is why many, many (maybe most) addicts come from middle-class families. They can afford the pills. Pills aren't "dirty". Your mom will give you your first one if it's your prescription.

And that leads me to the final point: I can almost guarantee this is what happened to this user. He was prescribed pain medication (Oxy) and got hooked.

And that is the goal of the pharma companies. So support legislation that puts those companies in the crosshairs of responsibility. They push this shit on people without fully conveying to them the dangers.

I love success stories. They give me hope. I’m an addict in recovery. Almost 14 months clean.
