Football is an inelastic product. Owners authorize wasting money on a flop player? Fans will still show up. Owners bump up ticket prices? Fans will still show up. Owners screw around with stadium name? Fans will still show up. Owners won't invest in the squad or a reputable manager? Yep - you guessed it.

Hardly any other business works like this. In real life, you need to fight nail and teeth for the customer's bucks or he'll get his fix elsewhere. But where there's tribal mentality and loyalty to the badge, cynical moneymakers can leech off that for years - on a cheap. Not that they even care for the sports anyway.

The way most clubs work is that they have background debt but it’s to the owners who aren’t likely to call it in as their asset would become worthless.

From what I can see with United, it’s slightly different in that the owners never had enough money to buy the business in the first place.

Wages are also extortionate and there are plenty of jobs for the boys. My company did some work for one former player who is employed by the club as a “global ambassador”. In his own words, he turns up to a few dinners and events that he’d be happy to go to for free anyway. United pay him £300,000 per year. Not crazy money, but the man himself described it as getting paid to go to a bar.
