Whedon fell out of favor with the Marvel fans some time ago. They overlooked a lot of things in the first Avengers movie, because it was all new and shiny, but most of them, men included, hated what he did to Natasha in Age of Ultron. She was at her best in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (different writers) and then came Age of Ultron where the character regressed. It's like he never watched the earlier movie, he threw away all that great character development.
