Sheer fear of being humiliated. But I’ve cried in the bathroom a couple of times as soon as court was over. Usually it’s the anger that gets me - when you’re so mad you cry.

Once I cried in a closing argument, but it was a particularly sad case and not out of place.

So yes, it does get super close. :)

The only thing I can imagine now is a lawyer standing and defending a person while bawling their eyes out

Trial lawyer here, ten years in. Family and juvenile law (abused and neglected kids) and let me tell you ‘not crying’ is the fucking hardest thing to do sometimes. I often say, “I’m off to work to get yelled at again today!” clients, other lawyers, sometimes judges but they’re mostly cool... And of course the sad fucking kids and awful parents. You don’t exactly get numb to it, but you learn a decent amount of stoicism, which is basically just learning to push ALL emotions away in order to always be proceeding more logically. It’s the only way I can do it.
