After Nintendo showed the trailer for Breath of the Wild's sequel, eager fans speculated that the tone possibly suggested that it's related to Ocarina of Time's direct sequel -- Majora's Mask, or that the Mask would be in the game itself.

During an interview at the Nintendo booth with IGN, Director and Producer of the Zelda Series, Eiji Aonuma, confirmed that the sequel will not in fact be related to Majora's Mask, despite the darker tone.

"The new Breath of the Wild or the sequel to it, it’s not necessarily going to be related to Majora’s mask or inspired by it... What we showed you currently is a little darker," Aonuma said.

IGN's Joe Skrebels wrote about the possible connection to Majora's Mask following the trailer at E3 for the upcoming sequel, saying, "Like the tale of Skull Kid, this looks dark, odd, melancholy: the trailer’s haunting reverse-voiced soundtrack, subterranean locations, murdered rats, and reanimated mummified remains lend a much grimmer tone than you might expect of a follow-up to Nintendo’s pastel colour masterpiece."

Aonuma said that since the Breath of the Wild sequel is still in production, there's not much more he can release about it.

"Darker than Majora's Mask"

Real shit

Take all my money Nintendo, as someone who has Majora's Mask tying with Breath of the Wild for his favorite Zelda title, you know exactly how to win me over even more than you already have
