I was in that guys position once. Was on the way home from work, driving on fumes. Pulled over, searched the car for change for just a gallon to get home. Scrounged together something under $2 (nickels, dimes).
Was absolutely mortified walking in there asking for something like $1.85 to pump 6. The guy at the counter was younger than me. Looked at me, smiled, and said “you got it.”

Moral of my life (learned from my mother): give as if you were in their position.

You would hope that a gas station cashier would have some empathy.
But that poor dude probably has to deal with shit all day himself.
Being poor just sucks man, all around.

The pump went to $10. Cried a little in the car.
