Skinner got 5.75 last year. Moulson's absurd $4m or whatever it is is coming off of the books. Buffalo hasn't had a player that hit 40 goals in a season in over a decade, if I'm not mistaken. Vanek in 07 might have been the last.
Does he get $9m if he's on a team that's playing well currently like Nashville, San Jose, or Tampa? Probably not. But Buffalo's not gonna run into cap problems any time soon, and really can't afford to lose him to free agency.
The other thing that's ignored is that Skinner completes Eichel. Eichel is, in his own words, a natural playmaker and passer first, not a sniper. He needs someone who he can set up consistently, who will actually finish (somewhat, for half the season at least) consistently. I'd say that $7-8m of the AAV is Skinner's true value, and the rest is his value to Buffalo. He held all the cards here and played them well. I doubt he'd get that much as a UFA, but he also wouldn't have been signing with Buffalo either, so I can't be mad.
