I participated in this search. To all the people who think Maui is not that big: the area she was lost in is a very dense tropical forest with sharp ravines. Im not exaggerating when i say, If she was laying 12 feet away from your position, it would be difficult to spot her.

Edit: i don’t want to hijack this post but i realize my comment has given me a platform to share an insightful story.. so here goes nothing:

There’s no easy way to write this, but my younger brother perished in a somewhat similar situation after he’d gone missing for 9 days. My recollection from that time period is still hazy, but one thing i remember distinctly was being awestruck of the search and rescue community (both formal and informal) They inspired me during my darkest moments and reinstalled a lot of my faith in humanity. That being said, there’s entire communities dedicated to this type of work, and as you can imagine, its volunteer based, so they’re always in need of workers. I’ve since joined the search and rescue division of my local Sheriff’s department. I share this in hopes to guide some of your curiosities. These stories are testament to human potential. We’re all capable of giving a little more.

Kinda proves the point that if you're lost, stop moving!

Glad she was found. Let her actions be a lesson for future adventurers as what NOT to do.

This sort of reminds me of Aron Ralston (the guy who had to cut his arm off as seen in the film 127 hours). He is a seasoned outdoors-man but let his ego nearly cost him his life. Not only was he alone but he didn't even let anyone know where he was going.
