I’m an American spending my 38th birthday in Japan with my first passport ever. Tokyo was the first stamp. I don’t make a lot of money and I won’t be able to travel like this again anytime soon but I am so happy to be here!

Ok. So. Thank you all!! Especially for the coinage! Having the best time exploring with my wife and her mom who is from here and showing us around/translating everything. To those saying get off reddit. We were out from 7am to 11pm non stop. Lemme drink my sake and watch dumb videos in peace! To the DM’s asking if I’ve seen a lot of hot girls...gross. Ok. Now time to wake up (5am again!) and head to Kyoto!

Poverty is definitely a big factor, but I also know plenty of people who have the means but zero interest in seeing the world.

Even when I had money saved, I couldn't go anywhere because it's nearly impossible to get 2 weeks off work. I had a coworker take time off to help sort her mom's belongings after she died, and she basically didn't get her annual raise because she 'took more time off than anyone in the department.' And that's after she worked for the company for 5 years and was second in seniority.
