The detail that Clarice misses is a painting of a moth/butterfly. The killer that she's chasing throughout the movie puts a cocoon inside the mouth of every victim that he kills. At this point in the movie, she does not know if this is the suspect's house, and the painting would have been a hint to her.

That first scene is so great because while she is brilliant, she isn't this perfect agent and she was unprepared for that terrifying climax scene.

Wow! I literally just got done watching this like 2 minutes ago! One cool thing I noticed was Buffalo Bills tattoo on his chest was a bloody rib. It's interesting because in the movie Buffalo Bill believes he's transgender (Lecter doesn't believe he actually is) and in the Bible Adam gives his rib to make Eve. So with the 'extra rib', it makes him feel like more of a woman.
