This begs the question, how intelligent is the squirtle? Is he reading? Is he playing a game and comprehending it? Or is it like putting one of those bug squish games in front of a cat? If the Pokemon anime counts as canon, Meowth proves that Pokemon can have intelligence on par with a standard human. Are the rest just as smart, but without the advanced vocal cords? Or is Meowth's anomaly his brain, and Pokemon are just naturally capable of human speech, provided they could understand how?
