65 year old co worker bragged about moving out at 14 and paying $200 a month for a full on house with 2 bedrooms and a full bathroom.

Added: you guys keep slapping me with the inflations but the whole point of the old mans flex is that it took a paycheck to pay for his house every month where I doing the same job now need three paychecks to cover my one bedroom apartment.

World population at 1974 was 4 billion people and mechanisation hadn't hit many industries. Women hadn't really fully entered the work force yet either.

So in about 45 years you have had at least twice the number of people enter the work force. Rural communities die off and those people move into the cities where infrastructure hasn't kept up.

A lot of jobs have moved overseas.
