I don't think a simple hand gun would be enough though, you'd just kill a few people and then be burned as a witch.
If you actually were to bring a weapon from present to 1000 years ago to destroy empires, your best choice would probably be a deadly disease, since diseases can spread fast and all medical stuff was very primitive back then.
