For school I did a small assignment once where we had to compare two portraits of a Maori leader, one done by a european, and one by the leader themself. While the european did it in a classical portait style (showing the head, neck, and upper body), the self portrait showed only the eyes, mouth, and tattoos. The difference was, of course, in percieved identity: the Maori leader saw himself as the tattoos. His identity was in those. Interesting stuff.
