CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A suspect is in custody following a shooting that left two dead and four people injured at UNC Charlotte on Tuesday afternoon. It was reported near the Kennedy building.

One of the injured victims is out of surgery according to officials.

The identities of the victims have not been released by officials. The suspect has been identified as 23-year-old Trystan Andrew Terrell.

The campus was placed on lockdown as soon as officials received reports of an active shooter. That lockdown was eventually lifted on a building by building basis, according to officials.

One of those injured in the shooting has been identified as Drew Pescaro. The fraternity he belongs to, Alpha Tau Omega, tweeted that he was injured in the shooting and is currently under medical supervision.

All university activities were canceled Tuesday night including a performance by rapper Waka Flocka. He tweeted he was safe and not near the scene of the shooting.

In a press conference Tuesday night, UNCC Police Chief Jeff Baker said the suspect was armed with a pistol and was quickly disarmed by officers and taken into custody.

The FBI is assisting the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and other law enforcement partners. CMPD is the lead investigative agency.

A candlelight vigil is scheduled for students, faculty, alumni and allies of UNCC at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Gov. Roy Cooper traveled to UNCC Tuesday evening, and Rep. Alma Adams will be on campus to stand with them and the city Wednesday.

UNCC Chancellor Philip Dubois called this "the worst day in the history of UNC Charlotte" later Tuesday night at another press conference. Gov. Cooper said that he knows the people in the community and knows they'll be here for each other.

Press conference:

Six shot: two died, three in critical condition.

Names of victims not yet released.

Not yet releasing what kind of weapon or weapons were used.

Law enforcement were already on campus for security at a Waka Flocka concert, so they got to the shooter quickly.

Shooting was in a classroom, cops got there so fast, shooter hadn't left the room.

Lockdown is over. EDIT: Lockdown is still going, conference said over, but everyone else (media, school alerts) say it's still on.

Undergrad student who was on campus today during the shooting. The building I was in was parallel to Prospector and you could see Kennedy from the front door. I was taking an exam and the professor said "not to raise any alarms but there have been shots fired at Kennedy, campus is on lockdown and this classroom is the safest place to be. Hopefully you can all focus on your exams." Still a totally surreal situation, honestly having that exam was the only thing keeping me from freaking the fuck out

EDIT: Class started at 5:30 so the exam was already in progress before anything happened. We weren't detained if we tried to leave but the professor did insist we stay in the classroom for our own safety.
