The poor kid was left bedridden with a feeding tube. He has since recovered but is wheelchair bound and suffered serious brain damage from blood loss. His family reports that he seems lively and robust but he cannot speak and communicates primarily with his eyes only.

Not a happy ending. Kid had brain damage, can’t speak, and is bound to a wheelchair.
