My guess is he has had it since childhood before the vaccine became commercially available in 1961. I have a few friends whose parents are in their 80s and all had polio and still have some of the remnants.
I had polio as a baby but got the vaccine, was told at the age of 4 that I would never walk again, well I walk about 5 miles a day now. Thanks to the vaccine and alot of physical therapy.
