Essentially, this means is that when someone does you a favor, they need to be able to justify it to themself, in order to avoid the cognitive dissonance that might occur from doing something nice for someone that they dislike. I've tried that and it works. There's a guy at my office who was notoriously ill-tempered and really wouldn't even speak to people. Since I had to work with him regularly, I made it a point to get him to like me or at least be pleasant. I wasn't so obtuse as to say "will you do X for me?". I think that would just irritate him. Instead, I'd do something and show it to him (he's a developer). Then I'd let him correct me and engage him in conversation about it, always making sure to be very appreciative. Over time, I got him to expand the conversations about more than just work. Now I'm one of the very few people in the office that he will communicate with beyond an annoyed grunt.

In my experience, it's a matter of how they feel about themselves. If you ask me to do something that makes me feel useful and good about myself, then every time I see you, I get a little reminder of that good feeling, which itself feels good. So I become more fond of you.

The flipside is also true. If someone has hurt you, especially if it was a deliberate injury, then every time they see you, they will be reminded that they are not the good person they would like to be, and that feels bad. So people often end up hating the most, precisely those people they have done the most harm to because the very existence of the harm-ee stands as a constant rebuke to the harm-er's self image.

I think 90% of what we say or do is about our image of ourselves internally.
