I've come across a lot of these letters written like this from around this time period. Paper was expensive and not easily to come by so people wrote this way to economize the letter to get as much info. written as possible.

Their penmanship is so consistent that it almost looks like it's written diagonally as well!

“(Can’t read place name) 30 Dec. 1836

Dear father,

I hope you are receiving my letters last week announcing my arrival and thereafter sundry adventures since then. “

I could do the rest but it would take quite a bit of time and I’ve got a busy day!

Edit: I had a little more time. Some of this uses foreign words and proper names I can’t quite make out. I made it about 2/3 down the page:

“I hardly know how to relate events – – I got here Sunday 18th. Next Monday called on the (French Constapador?) for whom I had letters. ... and helping rooms the size of .. and of which made me shiver. I received his Excellency and told gaunt Kingly Marquis—who received me in royal style—and after his returning “....” I was with equal dignity walked out. ... came next. He was very civil and after some considerations gave me an introduction to ... Constapadore Le Chevalier ... called on him and after long chat he promised to try his utmost, so after ... & & & something know and to my delight obtained permission & the 23rd at ... was fixed — at last — he told me I must address the pope in Italian or French.”

It appears this person traveled to France or Rome and met with some very important people! I’m hoping to be able to read more, because this is a very interesting letter.

OP, can you share any details about it?
