When I was in high school I carried out groceries at a local grocery store in an affluent town. We carried out for 90% of our customers, so tipping was pretty common. One day I was carrying out for an older lady, who said, “I’m sorry, I don’t have a tip for you.” I responded by saying, “that’s ok! Don’t worry about it!” To which she got really snappy and said, “I’m not worried about it! I just said I don’t have one for you!” And she got in her car and drove away. I was shocked by the instant change in demeanor just based on my casual wording.

I got literally screamed at for saying “no problem” instead of “you’re welcome.”
