When I was in high school, I wasn’t unpopular but I was definitely undatable. Which was completely fine, I’ve never been the dating sort and I had/have no interest in the whole thing.
In junior year some of the popular girls in class came over while I was working in the library and asked if I wanted to know a secret. I shrugged. They proceeded to, through mouthfuls of giggles, tell me that one of the popular guys, who was watching from across the room, looking bright red, thought I was cute.
He and I ran in very different circles and I’ve never been sure if they were being honest and embarrassing him or lying to me and embarrassing both of us. But my instinctual reaction was to shrug and say “...ok???” And go back to working.
I hope I didn’t hurt his feelings but damn the look of crestfallen frustration on their faces was priceless.
