I used to work at an after-school program for immigrant/refugee students, in a community with a big Somali population. Talk about resilience. These were kids whose school days were interrupted when they heard bombs going off, and they get home to find out one of their parents had been killed in the blast. Some of the girls were never taught to read and write in their native language. Then they get to America and some textbooks get thrown in their hands and they have to figure out long division and write essays about Ancient Mesopotamia while their mothers are going to night class to learn how to write a grocery list and their fathers are just trying to keep the family fed and housed. And the craziest part? They’re becoming nurses. And business owners. And graduate students. Every. Damn. Day.
