I only rate something when it's an exceptionally high quality product or is absolutely horrible.

Check out the "Billion Dollar Bully" documentary. Take it with a grain of salt and fact check everything, but it gives some really good insight into the relationships Yelp has with business owners. If the writers are to believed, it appears to be a pay-to-play game just like almost every other platform that can be leveraged for advertising.

On that note, I encourage everyone to rate and review things, even if you think you have nothing substantial to say. Sometimes, a given thing could use more ratings from amateurs who simply want something of sufficient quality. Most of my reviews are along the lines of, "Service was good, product was good, experience was good, 5 / 5!" If I have more to say, I'll throw in further thoughts.
