If your business can only exist, much less be profitable, by employing underpaid staff then your business it's destined to fail and should

Edit: good points. I'm just thinking about my home town Memphis where almost every min wage and lower job is like slum Lord indentured servitudes. They convey an entitlement that they are doing everyone a favor by hiring them and that they are lucky to have the job. People work with the flu and shit. I guess on the other side, small businesses are competing with some of these awful corporations out there (which are definitely responsible for the ridiculous skew of a living wage compared to cost of living) so though not excusable, it's at least explainable

Edit 2: what the fuck is this thread

So I'm all for this concept but I always have the same question and no one can seem to answer it:

Define Livable.

What exactly should you be able to afford to count as a livable wage?

I've met people that survive and provide for their family on a 15k salary for a year (due to an injury that kept them out of full time work for a year)

And I've met people who were almost always flat broke despite making 30k a year.

I've not heard anyone tell me what this livable definition is.

How big an apartment? Or should they be able to afford a house? What kind of car should they be able to afford? Or no car? Just public transport? How much should they be able to spend on groceries?

What two different people 'Need to live' can vary greatly. Hell my own financial state is extraordinarily different from my coworker who makes exactly the same I do. He's got a house and takes care of kids, I'm somehow always living paycheck to paycheck.

Edit: My first inbox death! Thanks guys!

Edit 2: Woah. My first silver too! Thanks reddit! :-)

It's a hard take but at least they're offering you an opportunity for an income at all. We all know none of the people claiming the same shit as OP are doing anything to create any market value that would give someone else the chance to make a living, so are you really in a position to demand that some business fork over $17/hr to you when you have the same qualifications as a 14 year old to do that same job?
