Old sci-fi was either insanely optimistic or insanely pessimistic. Either we're colonizing every planet in the galaxy or we've sucked the earth dry and our overlords are feeding us our own grandparents.
In the Sci-Fi classic "The Stars My Destination", the main character is an asteroid miner so it's based fairly far in the future, but when you make a phone call you go through a switchboard operator. I always find the stuff they think won't change more interesting in classic sci fi than what they get right.
