I rarely see my family at Christmas so I pretty much get out of the gift giving frenzy, but I usually do see my in-laws. Luckily I convinced them years ago to do a secret santa exchange. It really takes the pressure off, so I only have to buy for one person.
The most pointless of them all are amazon giftcards.
You give me one. I give you one. We don't think or care about what will make each other happy. Just a token gift of "here is X hours of my work, do what you want with it".
My friend group does a gift exchange every year, but two of us feel the same as you. So every year we go have a nice meal together and the two of us split the check. We've been doing this for a couple of years now, and everyone seems really happy with the arrangement.

The only winner is Bezos.
