GUATEMALA CITY (AP) — A 16-year-old singer in the Mexican pop group Magneto, Ricardo Abarca, has had three fingers reattached after four were sliced off when he waved to fans while beneath the rotors of a helicopter.
"The index finger and middle finger are completely recovered," surgeon Gustavo Lopez said Wednesday. "We only have some problems with blood circulation in the little finger."
Abarca's ring finger was not recovered after the accident on Saturday.
Abarca, known as "Richi," got off of a helicopter at Guatemala City's La Aurora International Airport on Saturday and raised his hands in greeting to waiting fans. The still-whirling rotors sliced off four fingers.
"They were dispersed over a radius of more than 100 meters (yards)," Lopez said, adding the operation to reattach the fingers required 14 hours.
Abarca had only recently joined the popular teen group which has gone through several changes of membership since it was formed in the mid-1980s.
