Im a product designer, and At my old job all the designers routinely came in about 30-45 minutes early in the morning and stayed about 15-30 minutes late at the end of the day. We never felt this was over extending ourselves as we mainly used this extra morning time to get acclimated to the work day and at the end of the day tie off any open projects and get out. Now the "sales people" would show up at 10:30-11 everyday and routinely leave before 4 and the owner CEO wouldn't come in until 2 if at all and no more than 4 days a week. Now there was a lot of problems with that job but at one point the owner complained about us leaving "at 5 on the dot" which did happen occasionally but rarely. The ensuing bitching back and forth ruined all good will he had left with us expecting us to go above and beyond without any compensation or perks(he wanted us to work 8-6 instead of 9-5) as a it would help the business grow (we also we're paid shit and had no commission structure). From that point on we all came in maybe 5 minutes early, made sure to take exactly a 1hr lunch, and left exactly at 5pm.

EDIT: I know 9-5 with a lunch is 7 hours but those were the established hours of the company, so regardless asking employees to work an additional hour past established guidelines with no increase in salary is still shitty.

My boss has this mentality. She is all about the company 24\7. The old manager was super neurotic and would work past her scheduled time and answer emails and phone calls at home.

When she quit due to stress and I took over the owner tried it on me. I simply turned off my work phone. The owner now messages me on my personal phone. I forward all messages to the work phone and answer them when Im next on the clock.

The owner is clearly frustrated with this but our turn over is so high they can't afford to lose me.
