Okay, so this isn’t really news, given that we’ve already seen him suited up in set photos earlier this year, but actor Jake Gyllenhaal has now given us official confirmation that he’ll be bringing the classic Spidey villain Mysterio to the big screen in next year’s Marvel and Sony-produced sequel Spider-Man: Far From Home.

This marks the first time that anyone involved with Far From Home has confirmed Mysterio’s inclusion in the film. Here’s Gyllenhaal’s post on Instagram (his very first!), where he realises he’s not playing Spider-Man…

If you’re unfamiliar with Mysterio, the character was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko and made his first appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man #13 back in 1964. The alter-ego of Quentin Beck, Mysterio a special effects wizard and stunt man who decides to give up on his Hollywood ambitions and put his skills to use as a supervillain. His appearance in Spider-Man: Far From Home marks the character’s live-action debut.

Spider-Man: Far From Home will be released on July 5th 2019 and features the return of Tom Holland (Spider-Man), Marisa Tomei (Aunt May), Michael Keaton (The Vulture), Zendaya (Michelle), Jacob Batalon (Ned Leeds), Angourie Rice (Betty Brant), Tony Revolori (Flash Thompson), Martin Star (Mr. Harrington), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury) and Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), with Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler) as Mysterio and J.B. Smoove (Uncle Drew), Remy Hii (Crazy Rich Asians) and Numan Acar (Homeland) in undisclosed roles.

If there’s no helmet in the film they can go fuck themselves

I was really disappointed that they went with the vulture as the villain for the first one and was blown away by how much they improved that character in the transition to film. Here’s hoping the same holds true for Mysterio.
