Russia: EU Member States Mull New Sanctions

Authored by worldview.stratfor.com and submitted by Vypadkovo

What Happened: Austrian Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl has said EU member states are considering new sanctions on Russia following an incident with Ukraine in the Sea of Azov, EUObserver reported Nov. 28. Other European countries, such as Estonia, Lithuania and Poland, have already called for new sanctions on Moscow, but representatives from France and Germany have spoken out against punitive measures.

Why It Matters: The development shows that EU member states are divided over the issue of how to deal with Russia as Eastern European countries back new sanctions against Moscow, while many Western European nations favor a more cautionary approach. EU governments are expected to extend the current sanctions on Russia for another six months in a meeting in mid-December. However, new punitive measures are unlikely to be implemented.

Background: Russia captured three Ukrainian ships on Nov. 25 as they attempted to traverse the Kerch Strait into the Sea of Azov.

I don't know why this isn't a bigger story here in France. I barely hear news about these developments. The news outlets, the talks shows, even fucking r/france seem 100% focused on those gilets jaunes while on the other side of our continent there are the makings of a new Sudetenland crisis. What the hell.
