Just wanna say composites are usually not my thing and I know /r/earthporn is not to keen on them. I labeled this as such and hope you still enjoy the piece. If not I get it, just remember I am people too and there is no need to be mean about it!

Yes, composites are allowed as per EP rules. I could have lied and uploaded this without any tags, but why be dishonest?!

Let me first address why this is a composite and maybe you will understand.

We hiked up the Delicate Arch trail just before golden hour. It was a good idea, considering the hike during the mid-day can be gruesome due to the heat. Golden hour and sunset was absolutely insane. I even posted a shot from it on EP, here.

However, the conditions we experienced were as a result of an incoming monsoon, so once the sun set we needed to descend the trail—fast. Safety was our number one priority that trip and risking some astrophotography to withstand the already 30+ mph wind gusts in the hopes that the sky clears is dumb.

A bit disappointed, I decided to convey my emotions in regards to the scene to the best of my ability. The end result is actually how the Milky Way would have aligned with Delicate Arch that night. It is strange to think that had it not been a monsoon, the sky would have given way to such a view. For now I can only recreate what I wanted to see, not what I could see.

Composite or not, this is still not how the human eye is able to see the stars. Simply put, humans cannot match a cameras capability to shoot long exposures at night, collecting light over a period of time.

Nikon D850 for both shots. Arches foreground: Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8G. 0.9 seconds, f/9, ISO 64. Rocky Mountain National Park Stars (taken just 4 days later): iOptron Skyguider Pro, Sigma 20mm f/1.4 ART. 2 minutes, f/2.8, ISO 800.
