Did everyone forget that Neville’s family figured out he wasn’t a squib when his uncle dropped him out a window and he bounced? Baby wizards can’t control their magic, but their magic can protect them unconsciously.

That was always my problem with the wizarding world of the Harry Potter books. You could do so much by combining modern tech and magic – but nooo, them wizards be snobs, y'all.

Muggletech's boring, yeah? Show me the wizard traces on the Moon, for one thing. And, like, I know we're talking about magic here, but behind all the mysticism there must be some sort of order the scientific method could be applied to. Just imagine:

wands with synthetic replicas of rare materials, refined potion recipes that don't require being brewed under the full moon surrounded by dragon hatchlings on a Friday hell, organizing the Hogwarts express so that it could leave as a genuine train from a genuine station, so that no wizard need risk breaking secrecy by disappearing after running full-speed into a column

Generally, the wizarding world's got it pretty good – but man, are they lagging behind.

I'm currently writing the AU world where such concerns are rectified, called 2011, after this universe's first year of Potter's Hogwarts study.

harry potter could have ended in the prologue if good old tom brought a damn knife.
