I remember sitting on an OP overseas with some Marine ANGLICO bubbas doing some training and swapping some branch specific stories. That day, I learned shit I didn’t know I didn’t know. For instance, I was shocked to hear that Marine NCOs are responsible for inspecting their junior Marines’ personally owned vehicles. Had no idea that was a thing.

But the most eye-opening part was when a Marine E-6 (I liked calling him Sergeant just to watch him get angry) told me how they purposefully go out of their way to treat junior Marines on their first contract as badly as they can possibly get away with. Their explanation to me was that not everyone gets to re-enlist, so treat them all like shit and then consider them somewhat human if they stick around.

Army: youre not going to find a job out there, and we're not going to let you back in.

Me: gets out

One month later

Army: hey, about reenlisting?

Me: nah. Also, I found a job.

My favorite was:

"If you don't reenlist then they'll just send you anywhere they need you."

"So I can choose my next duty station if I reenlist?"

"Well, not really."
