It's no secret that the fallout from the sexual misconduct allegations made against Kevin Spacey had a huge financial cost, but now we have a closer idea of just how much money Netflix lost.

The streaming giant dismissed Spacey from his leading role in hit series House of Cards following a number of claims last year, while also shelving his Gore Vidal biopic, Gore.

Now, according to a report in Buzzfeed, the cost of Netflix's decision to cut ties with Spacey has been revealed at "$39 million" – meaning if Gore ever sees the light of day, it'll lose money.

Although there appeared to be little hesitation over Spacey's exit as Frank Underwood in House of Cards, his former co-star (and new series lead) Robin Wright recently revealed there was a period of uncertainty over the show's future.

"Nobody really knew what to do," she said of House of Cards' final season. "I think we all mulled it over and said, 'Why are we going to let down the fans? Let's finish it off the way we always intended, contractually'."

Adding that there were benefits to keeping the show on – to avoid putting "2,500 people out of employment" – Robin continued: "I said, 'Let's just go out with a bang, let's give them an end, close out the show'."

House of Cards returns to Netflix on November 2.
