There was a Planet Money (I believe) about how nobody knows how much bitcoin is out there, lost forever due to things like this. There are even companies with the only function of helping people in this poor guy's situation.
I did the same thing - I mined 4 bitcoins years and years ago. I know the password to the wallet, but I lost the corresponding 4096-bit key to decrypt it.
