The biggest-selling single of the year has been taken off the shelves by its own creators in case the public get sick of it, or label the band a one-hit wonder.

After topping the charts for nine weeks, the American hip-hop duo Gnarls Barkley have deleted Crazy, which has stayed at No 1 for longer than any tune since 1994.

In that year Wet Wet Wet's hit Love Is All Around was the country's best-selling single for 15 weeks, selling 1.78 million copies. As with Crazy, it was withdrawn at the band's request. "Crazy has been a unique phenomenon, but we don't want to kill the song by getting people bored with it," said a spokesman for Warner Music. "The band, the record label, and probably everybody else want to move on."

The American duo behind the fictitious frontman, "Gnarls Barkley", are producer Danger Mouse and rapper Cee-Lo. They made history last month when Crazy became the first song to top the charts on online sales alone.

Then Cee Lo went on to write the timeless classic, "fuck you". He has preserved its greatness by only performing it 1000 times a day.
